Elderly individuals living alone can soon interact with an AI assistant in Tamil, powered by the newly released MERaLiON (Multimodal Empathetic Reasoning and Learning in One Network) Version 2. Developed by A*STAR with the support of Infocomm and Media Development Authority (IMDA), MERaLiON understands emotions through speech audio. At Day 1 of the ATxSummit, on May 28, Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo announced the enhanced capabilities that MERaLiON V2 brings. The model now expertly handles Malay, Tamil, Thai, Bahasa Indonesia, and Vietnamese on top of English, Mandarin and Singlish, with advanced code-switching abilities and emotion recognition features. Minister Teo also launched the MERaLiON Consortium, a significant boost to Southeast Asia’s AI capabilities. MERaLiON consortium is a collaborative platform that brings together local and global industry players and research and development (R&D) institutions like HTX, MOH Office for Healthcare Transformation (MOHT) and leading technology companies like Axiom IT Solutions, BytePlus, CommonTown, DBS, Grab and Microsoft Singapore.
